Judge sets date for Trump sentencing after the election to avoid appearance of tampering

Former President Donald Trump said Judge Juan Merchan postpone judgment It will be postponed until after the election to avoid suspicions of fraud.

Critics had hoped the former president would be sentenced before the election and that it would be used as a cudgel to beat his supporters.

“By order of the U.S. Supreme Court, this lawsuit should be dismissed along with every other Harris-Biden hoax.”

Judge Marchan agreed with the request from Trump's lawyers in a four-page ruling on Friday.

“The postponement decision on the motion and, if necessary, sentencing should dispel any suggestion that the Court will issue decisions or sentences that favor or disadvantage any political party or any candidate for public office,” he wrote.

The former president was convicted of falsifying business records in connection with payments he made to adult film producer Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. The trial's sentencing had been delayed for months as Trump's legal team argued that the conviction should be set aside due to a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.

“The Manhattan District Attorney's Office's witch hunt for election interference does not require sentencing,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chung said. “Following the U.S. Supreme Court's order, this case should be dismissed, along with the other Harris-Biden mischief cases.”

Marchan further noted the historic nature of the case and the difficulty of ensuring constitutional rights are respected in all aspects of the legal process.

“The jury worked diligently on this case and their verdict must be respected and addressed in a manner that is not diluted by the gravity of the upcoming presidential election,” he concluded. “Similarly, if necessary, the defendants are entitled to a sentencing hearing that respects and protects their constitutional rights.”
