Kamala Harris Is ‘the Most Unknown, Known Person in the Country’

Political commentator Chris Cillizza said on MSNBC's “The Andrea Mitchell Report” on Friday that the presidential debate is crucial because it will show voters what kind of person Vice President Kamala Harris is.

“This will be Donald Trump's seventh presidential debate and, as we all know, the first time he moderated he would have been more nervous than he is today,” Cillizza said. “You get better at these things. You build muscles. We know how it goes with Trump. He has one gear, one setting, whether it's at the press conference today or at the debate.”

He continued, “I think it'll be more interesting to see how Kamala Harris responds. She's done this before. She's been in vice presidential debates. But she's never been on this stage. There's only one debate scheduled right now. I don't know if there will be more. So the stakes are high. Remember, she's the least known, most famous person in the country. Most people know she is the Vice President of the United States. If you ask her to tell you one or two other things about her, especially to swing voters in battleground states, you might have a little trouble.”

Cillizza added, “The last two months have been a battle to define her. Donald Trump has been defined, and people don't like him. That doesn't mean people won't vote for him, but they don't like him. People don't necessarily know how they feel about her. I think this debate is really important. Is what people are looking at: Kamala Harris defined by Donald Trump, or Kamala Harris defined by Kamala Harris? Obviously, that makes a big difference in whether you win or lose.”
