“Clemson Football and the Clemson family mourn the loss of Clemson graduate Diondre Overton,” the school said in a social media post. “Our hearts are with his family and friends.”

Overton recorded 52 catches for 777 yards and seven touchdowns in four seasons with the Tigers and was selected as a team captain in 2019.

The school also posted a photo of Clemson balloons and flowers placed next to a plaque bearing Overton's name on campus.

He wasn't drafted by the NFL, instead being selected by the Memphis Showboats in this year's Dispersal Draft, before playing in the CFL, European League of Football, the USFL's Philadelphia Stars and the UFL.

Tributes from former Clemson teammates have already begun to appear on social media.

“I miss you already brother. I love you 5L. I'm hurting so much about this right now,” Bengals star receiver Tee Higgins wrote on his Instagram Story.

Cardinals defensive end Xavier Thomas also spoke openly about how much Overton meant to him.
