The Arizona Cardinals will be heading across the country to take on the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 of the NFL season, and while Buffalo is favored by 6.5 points at BetMGM Sportsbook, I'm more interested in the over/under at 47.5 points.
I think this game will be winnable. Both teams have talented quarterbacks in Josh Allen and Kyler Murray, and both teams come into this game with question marks on defense.
Arizona gave up the second-most points per game in the NFL last year and was 25th in yards allowed. The Cardinals also had several injuries during fall training that could hinder their defensive progress this season. First-round draft pick defensive end Darius Robinson is on injured reserve with a calf injury and second-year linebacker BJ Ojulari is on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Arizona being without its two best players from its front seven is not ideal going into a matchup with Allen and the Bills. Allen rushed for 524 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, and with those two not on the field he should have many more running lanes at his disposal.
Additionally, running back James Cook rushed for 1,122 yards last season, giving Buffalo plenty of options on the ground.
The Cardinals should be able to compete offensively, too. In eight games last season, Murray passed for 1,799 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Now Murray can distribute the ball to first-round draft pick wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., underrated tight end Trey McBride (825 yards in 2023) and 1,000-yard runner James Conner.
