Sinner handily defeated Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 at Flushing Meadows. He finished the U.S. Open with eight straight wins, including a straight win over Jack Draper in the semifinals and a win over Daniil Medvedev in the final two sets in the quarterfinals.
Sinner was the top seed going into the tournament, but his appearance was shrouded in controversy: He tested positive for a low level of a metabolite of clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid that can be used in ophthalmology and dermatology. Still, he was allowed to play in the U.S. Open, and he benefited from it.
He believed it was an honest mistake and was supported by Andre Agassi during the tournament.

“Was it significant? I don't think it was significant and I don't think he would risk something that small. No way,” he told Fox News Digital in August. “Nobody would knowingly take that risk, so I believe it.”
He beat Michael McDonald, Alex Mikkelsen, Christopher O'Connell, Tommy Paul, then Medvedev, Draper, and finally Fritz.
Fritz was looking to put the U.S. back on top of the men's tennis world for the first time since 2003. No American men's player has won a Grand Slam tournament since then.
