Iconic actor, 98, is still ‘looking for work’

As he approaches his 100th birthday, Dick Van Dyke continues the tradition of choosing happiness and leading with a smile.

Van Dyke fielded questions about his future after accepting the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, and when asked how he wanted to be remembered, the iconic actor responded simply:

“It's for the laughs,” the “Mary Poppins” star said while holding a trophy for Outstanding Variety Special for “The Magic of Dick Van Dyke '98.” People Magazine“I want to keep making people laugh for 75 years.”

With his win on Saturday, Van Dyke became the oldest recipient of a Creative Arts Emmy Award, tying him with the late comedy legend Norman Lear. His wife, Arlene Silver, shared a video of the standing ovation Van Dyke received upon receiving his award.

After more than 70 years of success in the entertainment industry, Van Dyke has no plans to slow down just yet.

After accepting his award, the “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” actor took some time to reflect on his career, saying, “I've been in this business for 75 years. I can't believe I'm still here acting.”

He paused for a moment, then displayed his characteristically quick comedic timing: “If anybody has a job, I'm looking for a job,” he said.

As for the advice he would give to young actors in the industry, his answer was simple.

“You have to do it,” he said. “You're going to have hard times and a lot of auditions, but you have to do it. If you believe in yourself, it's really important to persevere and believe that you can do it.”

His wife, Arlene Silver, who is 46 years his junior and produced the special, accompanied him onstage to accept the award.

“This young woman who won this award might bring to mind the word nepotism, and I understand that, but this woman got the job as producer on the Dick Van Dyke special on her own because she knows me inside out, she knows my work and she's the kind of person who doesn't take any shit from anyone,” Van Dyke said.

Earlier this year, he performed and wowed audiences. “The Masked Singer” And he'll star in the upcoming film “Capture the Flag,” about military veterans who compete for the right to fly the flag in their neighborhood every morning.
