Trump: Sanders threw Harris ‘under the bus’ after eyebrow-raising election comments

Former President Trump mocked his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the vice president abandoned far-left policy positions “to win the election.”

“Bernie Sanders just said Kamala changed her Marxist policy positions just for the election. She will change back soon!” Trump posted on his Truth social account on Monday.

During an interview on NBC on Sunday, the progressive senator was asked about Harris abandoning some of the far-left policy positions she previously supported, including banning fracking and supporting “Medicare for All.”

“Do you think she's abandoning progressive ideals?” NBC's Kristen Welker asked Sanders on “Meet the Press.”

Bernie Sanders says Harris abandoned far-left policies 'to win the election'

Former President Trump mocked Vice President Harris, saying she was “sacrificed” by Senator Bernie Sanders in explaining his policy shifts.

“No, I don't think she's abandoning her ideals,” he replied. “I think she's trying to be pragmatic and trying to do what she thinks is right to win the election.”

Sanders also reiterated that while they didn't agree on everything, he still considered Harris to be a progressive.

Trump claimed Sanders had exposed Harris as a “total fake.”

“Bernie Sanders has really thrown his comrade Kamala Harris under the so-called 'bus' and essentially said very clearly that she is a complete fake. Once a Marxist, always a Marxist!,” he wrote in another post on Truth Social.

The Harris campaign and the White House did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital about Sanders' portrayal of Harris.

A campaign spokesman previously Confirmed by Fox News Digital Harris changed some key policy positions and said she was taking a “pragmatic” approach to “bringing all our positions together.”

“While Donald Trump holds fast to the extreme ideas of his Project 2025 plan, Vice President Harris believes that true leadership means bringing all sides together to build consensus,” spokesperson Mia Ellenberg said in a statement. “This approach has enabled the Biden-Harris Administration to make bipartisan breakthroughs on everything from infrastructure to gun violence prevention. As president, she will take that same pragmatic approach, focusing on commonsense solutions for progress.”

Trump 2024 national spokesperson Caroline Leavitt repeated Trump's claims that Harris has made misleading statements about policy stances.

“Senator Sanders is saying what the Harris campaign doesn't want the American people to know, which is that Kamala Harris is the quintessential politician who lies to get elected. She's trying to get away with what she's done over the last four years, but she can't do that because it's a Harris-Biden administration,” Leavitt told Fox News on Monday.

Leavitt argued during Wednesday night's ABC News presidential debate that Trump “will finally hold her accountable for the failures of the last four years and the failures of his entire career” on immigration, inflation and crime.
