Illegal immigrant convicted of rape arrested

Immigration authorities in Baltimore, Maryland, have arrested a record 153 illegal immigrant sex offenders this fiscal year, the most recent being a Honduran man who had been deported from the United States after being convicted of raping a Maryland resident.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Deportation Operations Division announced last week that Madai Gamaliel Amaya was detained on Aug. 29 outside Montgomery Village.

“This is a landmark arrest for ERO Baltimore. They have arrested a record 153 foreign sex offenders in their operating area in a single fiscal year, but more importantly, because of ERO officers, 153 victims no longer need to fear their perpetrators,” said Daniel Bible, ERO's Deputy Director.

According to ICE, Amaya entered the United States illegally several years ago at an unknown date and location. On January 8, 2009, he was arrested by Montgomery County police and charged with second-degree rape.

He was convicted a few months later and sentenced to 10 years in prison and three years of probation after his release. Two and a half years of his sentence were suspended by a judge. ICE filed a detention request with local authorities in 2010, and Amaya was deported in 2013.

Amaya was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents near Hidalgo, Texas, on July 27, 2016, while attempting to enter the country illegally. He was convicted of illegal entry in 2017 and sentenced to 30 months in a federal prison in Oklahoma.
