On Monday, Meredith Gaudreau spoke at Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau's funeral, where she announced that she was pregnant with the late player's baby. There was loud consternation at the funeral, and those in attendance quickly realized that the baby would never get the chance to know its real father.
“The past week has felt like I've been trapped in a nightmare that I can't wake up from,” Madeline said at Monday's memorial. “I feel numb, angry, sad and blessed all at the same time. Some days I feel depressed thinking about this new reality, but most of the time I just miss Matt.”
While most people already knew that Matthew's widow, Madeline Gaudreau, was previously pregnant with their first child, she revealed during her moving eulogy that she and Johnny are also expecting their third child.
“John and I have had the best six months as a family of four,” Meredith said of life following the birth of their second child in February.
“These have been the best six months of my life forever,” the widow said, “and there is one week in particular within those six months that I will cherish forever. It is my favorite week of my life. We are actually a family of five. I am nine weeks pregnant with our third baby.”
She went on to say that the pregnancy was a “total surprise” and that Johnny was overjoyed.
“John was beaming and so excited,” she said. “He gave me a quick kiss and a hug.
“Our oldest daughter, Noah, [a daughter] “Our son isn't even two yet. Less than three years after we were married, we were a family of five,” Meredith said.
“It may seem impossible but I see it as the ultimate blessing and how lucky I am to be the mother of John's three babies. Despite these difficult circumstances, we are overjoyed that this last one is a blessing and very special.”
“To my kids: Daddy loves you so much. You have the best daddy in the world.”
On August 29th, the day before his sister's wedding, John (who also played for the Calgary Flames) and Matthew (who played college hockey with him at Boston University) were hit and killed by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes.
