With election season in full swing, former NFL quarterback Brett Favre had a message for his followers, seemingly urging Americans to ignore celebrities and their loud, partisan political rhetoric.
The former Green Bay Packers quarterback switched to his X account on Monday and issued a warning to his 370,000 followers.
“An estimated 150 million people vote, with only a tiny fraction of them being celebrities,” they wrote.
“I would urge most people to do their own research and not listen to what their favorite singers or actors or athletes say,” he added, perhaps undercutting his own advice.
Whether the advice comes from your “favorite athlete” or not, not letting a celebrity dictate what to think or how to vote is usually good advice. Indeed, very few celebrities are super knowledgeable about the intricacies of any issue.
Favre's advice received a lot of attention.
Some people pointed out that the post was somewhat contradictory.
“This advice is contradictory,” wrote X user Paul A. Cipra.
“You are one of them. Thanks for reminding us all,” another X user replied.

Either way, Favre has a point. This country was founded on the expectation that voters would be well informed. That's what Founding Father Benjamin Franklin meant when he said, “If we can preserve the Republic…” If we vote without understanding what we're voting for, sooner or later we'll lose our country.
