US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed on Tuesday that a Turkish-American pro-Palestinian activist who was killed in the West Bank on Friday was “murdered at the hands of the Israel Defense Forces,” although Israel has reported her death was an accidental one.
Israel Defense Forces [IDF] The summary was published Report The Palestinian Authority in Israel said on Tuesday that Aysenur Ezgi Egi died in an accident when soldiers returned fire with live ammunition at a mob that was burning tires and throwing stones in the West Bank, known in Israel as Judea and Samaria.
“Investigations have determined that she was most likely hit indirectly and unintentionally by IDF gunfire, which was not directed at her, but at the main perpetrators of the riots,” the IDF said. “The incident occurred during a riot at Beita crossing, where dozens of suspected Palestinians burned tires and threw stones at security forces.”
The IDF added that the investigation was continuing.
Blinken, Appearance “The evidence seems to indicate that her killing was neither provoked nor justified, as witnesses have testified and made clear,” Israeli investigators said at a joint press conference in London with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
“No one should be shot and killed for taking part in a protest. No one should have to risk their life simply for freely expressing their opinion,” Blinken said, ignoring acts of violence documented in an IDF investigation.
He argued that Israel needed to change the “rules of engagement” in the West Bank, referring to “extremist” Israeli settler violence against Palestinians (while ignoring Palestinian terrorism against Israeli civilians).
Blinken added that Ezgi Eygi “was killed at the hands of Israeli security forces. This is unacceptable. Things must change. I will make that clear to the highest levels of the Israeli government.”
He concluded that even if the report was taken “at face value”, there were “serious issues that need to be addressed”.
