Steph Curry Sparks Controversy by Backing Kamala Harris’ Pro-Choice Views

NBA superstar Stephen Curry's endorsement of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has sparked outrage from fans and pro-life activists, who have cited Harris' stance on abortion legalization as a major factor in his support. Curry, a four-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors and a gold medalist for the United States at the 2024 Olympics, told CNBC that supporting Harris was an “easy choice.”

Curry endorsed Harris in a video at the Democratic National Convention but did not previously explain why.

When asked what issues she cares about most, Curry replied, “Especially women's rights and thinking about what's at stake in this election and understanding that women need to be in a position where they have the right to choose what's right for them, that's the most important thing to me.”

“I have incredible women in my life who are such an inspiration to me, and having known Kamala and been around her, I know she is qualified for this job,” he added. “I think she epitomizes what it means to be a great leader and an honorable human being in terms of representing our country well.”

“So it was an easy choice for me to be in a situation where I can go to the Democratic National Convention, make a video like this, let people know how I feel and foster a positive dialogue through all of that,” he said. “I think that's what we need in our country.”

Curry's mother, Sonia Curry, revealed in a 2022 interview and book that she nearly aborted Steph.

“God had a plan for this child,” Sonia Curry told podcaster and pastor Luke Norseworthy.

It was meant to be her second abortion, she said.

“If I had gone through that, there would be no Wardell Stephen Curry II,” she said, using Mr Curry's full name.

She said the “Holy Spirit” was “interceding in a way that I didn't even know what was going on in that moment.”

Lila Rose, founder and president of the pro-life organization Live Action, expressed disappointment in the NBA superstar's comments.

“I pray that Stephen Curry is blind to reality and that no one has explained to him that a woman's right to choose is actually deadly violence against a helpless developing human being,” Rose said on the podcast. “Abortion means starving to death with an abortion pill, sucking to death with a first-trimester abortion, or dismembering a baby in the image of God to death with a second-trimester abortion.”

“That's the opposite of love,” Rose said of abortion. “It's hate. … That's what Kamala stands for.”

“If his mother had had an abortion, he wouldn't be here and his children wouldn't be here,” said pro-life activist Anna Luris.

Former NFL player and pro-life activist Benjamin Watson said Curry's comments show pro-life groups still have a lot of work to do.

“Many are shocked and/or disappointed that Stephen Curry made abortion his top voting issue. I am neither,” Watson said on his former Twitter account. “But I am fired up. If these weak arguments can convince him that life doesn't matter, how much more will the actual truth impact him? We have work to do.”
