Rhode Island US Senate nominees decided in Tuesday primary

Rhode Island voters flocked to the polls today to decide who will face off in November's U.S. Senate elections.

The Rhode Island Democratic primary pitted incumbent Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who is seeking a fourth term, against Michael Costa, a former Republican who briefly ran for governor in 2022. Meanwhile, the Republican race pitted state Rep. Patricia Morgan against former Warwick City Administrator Raymond T. McKay.

Sheldon Whitehouse has emerged as the Democratic champion and will face off against Republican candidate Patricia Morgan in November.

The Associated Press reported the election results Tuesday night, less than 20 minutes after the polls closed.

Costa told WPRI last month that he wants to bring “understanding and compassion, pragmatism and realism” to Washington.

Costa also insisted he wanted a “good country, not just a great one.”

“One that addresses clear problems without always pursuing partisan gain. Yes, immigration needs to be controlled and fair. Yes, real budget choices are necessary because excessive government spending creates inflation. Yes, climate change requires global, engineered solutions,” Costa said.

Meanwhile, Whitehouse argued that the Senate has unfinished business.

“I'm leading the fight to clean up a Supreme Court mess that benefits the billionaires who fund its control while denying women the freedom to make decisions for their own lives and children the freedom to be safe in their schools. I've taken on Big Oil to stop climate change from completely reshaping Rhode Island and to stop price gouging at the pump,” Whitehouse told WPRI.

Morgan has centred his campaign around the economy, promising to support struggling families as they fight “harmful policies” in the nation's capital.

“Hardworking Rhode Islanders deserve to be treated better. I've spent 12 years in the State Legislature fighting for them to ensure they keep more of the money they work hard for. Rhode Islanders and all Americans deserve a senator who looks out for their best interests, not their bank account,” Morgan told WPRI last month.

Meanwhile, McKay highlighted his own military experience in the operation.

“My extensive military and professional background makes me a great fit to represent Rhode Island. I served in the United States Army for 11 years, specializing in electronic maintenance of the West German Pershing nuclear missile system, and trained as a computer programmer at Fort Sill and Fort Gordon,” McKay told WPRI.
