Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on stage Tuesday night for their first, and likely only, debate of the 2024 presidential election.
The debate took place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and was moderated by ABC News' David Muir and Lindsey Davis, who provided dubious fact-checking of some of Trump's claims but did not allow for refutation of some of Harris's.
For example, after Trump suggested that some Democrats, including former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, support abortion after birth, Davis said no one supports abortion after birth, adding, “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after birth.”
In 2019, Northam However, he indicated he would support abortion after birth in some cases.
“If a mother goes into labor, I can tell her exactly what is going to happen,” Northam told radio station WTOP.If the mother and family wish, the infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, and the infant would be resuscitated.A discussion then takes place between the doctor and the mother.”
“She didn't get one vote. He got 14 million votes. A threat to democracy. He got 14 million votes, and they threw him out of power.”
Muir later claimed he “didn't notice the irony” that Trump allegedly used when he said he lost the 2020 election “by a narrow margin.”
“We need borders, and we need good elections,” Trump said. “Our elections are terrible.”
But Harris pointed out that Trump “went out of control” to white supremacists in Charlottesville in 2017.Very wonderful peopleShe called herself and some American military personnel “idiots and losers,” but received no rebuttal from Muir or Davis.
Ms Harris avoided her usual wordy speeches throughout the night, but she frequently made dramatic facial expressions that seemed even more theatrical compared to Mr Trump's calm demeanor.
That night, Ms Harris was forced to voice her muted support for Israel and call Hamas a “terrorist organisation”. She also said she owns a gun but gave no details. What type of gun does she own?when you purchased it, and whether you have ever fired it.
Harris previously said:Mandatory Buyback Program“For the gun.”
After Harris suggested at the debate that Trump was a threat to democracy, Trump pointed out to the audience that Harris did not receive a single vote in the 2024 Democratic primary, while President Joe Biden received 14 million votes, and that Harris and other Democrats “threw him out of the campaign like a dog.”
“She didn't get one vote. He got 14 million votes. A threat to democracy. He got 14 million votes and they threw him out of office. And, listen? I'll tell you a little secret. He hates her. He can't stand her,” Trump claimed.
“Where is our president?”
Trump also landed some rhetorical punches, telling her on various occasions: “Please be quiet” and “I'm talking right now. Does this sound familiar?” he joked, referring to lines similar to those Harris used with Mike Pence in the 2020 vice presidential debate.
But perhaps Trump's strongest moment came in his closing remarks, when he asked the key question of the campaign: Why isn't she doing what she's promising to do now?
“She started out saying she was going to do this, she was going to do that, she was going to do all these great things,” Trump began in his closing speech. “Why didn't she do it? She was there for three and a half years. They were given three and a half years to fix the border. They were given three and a half years to create jobs.”
“Why didn't she do it?”
Earlier this summer, Trump won a debate against President Joe Biden, who appeared sluggish and disoriented and had great difficulty getting his points across clearly.
About a month after the June debate, Biden withdrew from the 2024 race and Harris was selected by delegates to the Democratic National Convention shortly thereafter as the Democratic candidate to succeed Biden.
Harris did not participate in the 2024 presidential primary election, and therefore did not receive any votes from the American people. She ran in the 2020 Democratic primary election, but withdrew before the Iowa caucuses, and did not receive a single vote in that election either.
For now, the only presidential debate will be between Trump and Harris' respective running mates, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.), hosted by CBS News, in New York City on October 1.
Trump tried to debate Harris on Fox News earlier this month, but she did not appear. Instead, Trump took part in a raucous town hall event with Sean Hannity in Pennsylvania.
Trump also suggested holding a debate later this month, but Harris Team He did not agree to participate, instead proposing to hold the debate again in October.
