Morning fellow Championship stoics. After a weather-heckled day yesterday it’s currently gloriously sunny in London, though it looks a bit more variable in Taunton and could worsen in Durham. Day three will be something of a moving day, as captains decide to stick or twist. In the clash of the top two, leaders Surrey will want to plod on methodically and do all they can to limit Somerset’s room for winning manoeuvre, while at the bottom Lancashire have a battle on their hands to avoid defeat at Durham, whose fifth-wicket pair ground them into the dust yesterday evening, while Notts need to keep Sam Cook, Jamie Porter and co at bay at Chelmsford.

Middlesex take early winToby Rowland-Jones castled the potentially dangerous Tom Price for 14. Gloucestershire were 161-6 and still 216 runs behind.
Essex reportedly deducted 12 runs due to bat width
The Times reports that Essex were deducted 12 runs after batsman Feroz Khushi was deemed to have used the bat too much, in what the club called a “completely stupid” decision.
Khushi's bat was tested in an away game against Nottinghamshire in April and exceeded the legal limits – rule 5.7.2 states that a bat must be no more than 10.8cm wide and its edge no more than four centimetres.
Essex The players are unhappy, with club chairman Keith Fletcher telling The Times: “The ECB believe this is cheating and the appeals committee are trying to show force. Fellows believes he did nothing wrong and it is the whole team that has been punished, not just one player.”
Durham was docked 10 points in 2022 after Nick Maddinson's bat did not pass through a metal gauge held by an umpire. If a bat is deemed too large, it will be inspected again because moisture can change its dimensions.
Northamptonshire's view: At this stage of the season there are a few meaningless matches that we might be slightly overlooking – Northampton v Derbyshire being one of them – so we're going to hand the stage over to Scotty 848 BTL to vent a bit of frustration.
Well…the match between two bald men fighting over a comb didn't get mentioned in the recap and I can't blame them. I hope KEOGH gets a double hundred and DCCC caves in soon so we can move forward quicker towards the end of the season. I start every round with at least a day of complaining but rather than go into detail I can say for certain I will not be a member next year. I just can't justify the expense given the few days of watching cricket, most of it terrible, and the direction the club is currently going in. With a new coach and a clean sweep I might reconsider but with only one home win in five years and frustrations with recruitment, youth, coaching etc it just isn't worth it. I'll go to the occasional game and follow everything here and on YouTube, unless they do a Leicestershire game. I'll be back when things get better. At the moment I have a stupid sexy KEOGH on the radio so things could get worse.
Transfer news: Nottinghamshire, whose attack looked fairly harmless at Chelmsford yesterday, have brought in New Zealand seamer Jacob Murphy for the final two games of the season. This is a quote from PA Media.
Nottinghamshire have signed former New Zealand bowler Jacob Duffy for their final two matches of this season's Vitality County Championship. The seamer, who has 20 one-day and T20 caps for his country, will face his former club Kent and then Warwickshire.
Nottinghamshire are currently battling to avoid relegation from Division One. “Jacob is a great player who has joined us at a crucial time in the season,” Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores said. “We all understand how important the remaining few weeks are.”
Tuesday Summary: Pepper hits 100 points as Surrey beats Taunton in solid fashion
of Somerset Teenager Archie Vaughan continues to make a name for himself. The 18-year-old son of former England captain Michael Vaughan has scored three consecutive runs after scoring 44 on the opening day. Sally A right-arm off-break claimed his wicket at Taunton on day two, but the visitors and championship leaders will have ended the day more content, having cautiously steered to 169 for three in a match that second-placed Somerset needed to win.
After Vaughan was two strikes early, Ben Geddes partnered Ryan Patel to score fifty in only the seventh first-class match, with Patel also scoring, and Vaughan then caught Geddes for a top-edge sweep, but Patel and Ben Foakes kept the match steady until the weather brought an early end to the match.
In a team struggling against relegation Lancashire I have serious problems Durhamhelped South Africa's David Bedingham, who was returning with a century in an international match, and Colin Ackerman, who also reached triple figures just before the final whistle, surpass the visitors' 228 runs.
Their colleagues Nottinghamshire Tormented by the skilled century EssexMichael Pepper of 's made his second consecutive hundred, helped by a half-century from Simon Harmer, as Essex passed 450, before the ever-lively Sam Cooke had Notts captain Haseeb Hameed caught at backward point before the rain arrived.
Under them, we are doomed Kent After some defensive work from Tom Prest and Brad Wheel, they surrendered again and collapsed to 63-5. HampshireIt expertly manipulates its tail to lift itself to a height of more than 400 cm.
The top three teams in Division 2 are guaranteed wins if the weather cooperates. SussexBeyond Games Glamorgan At Hove, the victory was achieved thanks to an unbeaten 194-run partnership between veteran John Simpson, who scored his 15th hundred, and Tom Clarke (79 not out).
Jonathan Tattersall's 100 points Yorkshire A big lead in the first innings Leicestershire, He lost two easy wickets in his second knock before rain brought relief. And Middlesex Gaining an advantage GloucestershireToby Rowland-Jones scored three times for Lord's.
preamble
Morning Companion Championship StoicAfter yesterday's weather woes, London is currently gloriously sunny, but a little changeable in Taunton and potentially even worse in Durham. Day three will be a busy one as captains decide whether to hang in there or twist things around. In a showdown between the top two teams, leaders Surrey will want to play it smart and give Somerset as little room for maneuver as possible to win. Meanwhile, bottom-placed Lancashire will be battling to avoid defeat at Durham after being beaten by a fifth-wicket pair last night, while Notts must hold off the likes of Sam Cooke and Jamie Porter at Chelmsford.
In Division Two, leaders Sussex are favourites to beat Glamorgan, Yorkshire are favourites to beat Leicestershire, while Middlesex will need to try a bit harder to beat Gloucestershire at Lord's. We'll keep you up to date with these and other matches, and feel free to share your views in the comments section or by email. Let's play!
