Trump Is Right, Migrants Have Enjoyed Most Job Growth Under Biden-Harris Administration

The claim: Former President Donald Trump says mass immigration under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris has resulted in an increasing number of immigrants taking American jobs in the U.S. economy.

The verdict: Mostly true. Economic studies have consistently shown for months that immigrants are enjoying the lion's share of year-over-year job gains in the labor market.

“We have millions of people coming into our country from prisons and jails, from mental hospitals and psychiatric hospitals. They're coming in and taking jobs that are currently held by African-Americans, by Hispanics and by unions,” Trump said. “The unions are going to be immediately affected.”

The Center for Immigration Studies released an analysis in June finding that about 75% of U.S. job gains since 2019, before the Chinese coronavirus pandemic shut down the country's economy, have come from new immigrants, including both illegal and legal immigrants.

About 1.24 million foreign workers secured jobs last year, while the number of U.S.-born people working in the U.S. fell by 1.32 million over the same period, according to a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report.

“Since pre-pandemic, employment for foreign-born workers has increased by 4.4 million (and is growing again), while employment for native-born Americans has fallen by 833,000 over the same period — literally no progress in five years,” economist EJ Antoni noted.

More than 30 million legal and illegal immigrants are employed in the U.S. as of 2022, up 20% over the past 15 years, according to a July study by the Pew Research Center. Over the same period, the number of U.S.-born people joining the workforce has increased by less than 10%.
