Cathy MacFarlane and Victor Romero Evans in the 1982 film Burning an Illusion.

Burning an Illusion (Menelik Shabazz, 1982), 8:20am, 4pm, Sky Cinema Greats
One of the unfortunately few mainstream features made by black British filmmakers in the 1980s and a clear touchstone for Steve McQueen's recent Small Axe series, Menelik Shabazz's groundbreaking drama covers a wide range of ground. It begins as a failed love story between the independent-minded Pat (Cathy MacFarlane) and unemployed toolmaker Del (Victor Romero Evans), whose relationship is challenged by his macho, controlling attitude. But a violent incident leads Pat to become more politically aware of her unequal existence. Simon Wardell
