Why the Debate May Not Matter at All

The first poll was conducted after the presidential debate and so far the results are broadly similar to the pre-debate polls.

This is somewhat surprising given that the media had reported that Vice President Kamala Harris had soundly defeated former President Donald Trump.

Maybe the rest of America wasn't hearing a coherent economic policy? Maybe they found the presenters unusually biased? Maybe they didn't like the grimaces and smirks?

FYI, I thought Harris “won” the debate. Or more accurately, she used it more effectively than Trump did. She needed to show Democrats she could put up a good fight, and she did.

She didn't strike a deal with voters — in fact, she couldn't answer basic questions like, “Do you think Americans are better off than they were four years ago?” — but she reassured Democrats who didn't vote for her that she was a viable candidate.

Trump tried to hit her, but that was a mistake.

For weeks I've said that Trump should ignore Kamala in the debates, because no matter how well he does and no matter how bad she does, her supporters will believe she won. The jubilation over Kamala's performance would have been the same even if she had completely failed.

All Trump had to do was get the message across to his voters and tell them what victory would look like.

Few will watch the debate to make up their minds — most have already made up their minds — and Harris and her party understand that this election is really two elections: one for Democrats and one for everyone else.

Democrats feel the “vibe,” vote by mail, and enjoy the worship of the mainstream media. Republicans are the poor souls who think about the issues and show up to the polls on Election Day. If you don't show up to the polls in overwhelming numbers, you lose.

Trump didn't make any major mistakes; “Dog” and “Cat” made for great memes; the host's “fact check” probably helped Trump by making it clear that he was fighting a rigged system.

But he missed an opportunity. When Kamala screwed up on the economy, he should have pointed it out. When the moderator confronted him, he He imitated Newt Gingrich. And it reminded me of just how awful they are.

The good news for Trump is that it probably doesn't matter.

As I've been saying for weeks, this debate likely won't affect the election because the underlying issues are so powerful.

Democrats lean on abortion, which for most people is something that happens to other people, while Republicans complain about inflation, the border crisis, fears of crime, and other things that are more or less happening to other people. everyone.

There is a quiet sense of tension in America today, and a widespread feeling that things cannot continue as they are.

Maybe your debit card is rejected at the grocery store. Maybe there's a tent city across the street and the police have stopped intervening. Maybe your child is told they're transgender at school and there's nothing you can do about it. Maybe you wonder why politicians are spending so much money on the war in Ukraine.

Everyone understands that Kamala Harris would not change any of that if she wins because the current people in charge would remain in charge.

So Americans may have already decided to give Trump another chance — unless he's crazy. A man who took a bullet to the head and stood up might have the will to save the day.

In the meantime, let the Democrats at least feel like they fought a good fight, which probably means they'll accept defeat this time.
