Yankees extend Lou Trivino’s rehab to keep reliever as postseason option

The Yankees and pitcher Lou Trivino have agreed to an extension of his rehabilitation period by 10 days, starting Friday, The Washington Post has learned.

Trivino hasn't pitched in the major leagues since the 2022 playoffs. He underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2022. The Yankees re-signed the veteran right-hander in February to a $1.5 million contract through 2024 with a $5 million option for 2025.

“Lou has made outstanding progress,” his agent Steve Kanter said. “He appreciates the support of the club and a contract extension makes sense.”

Trivino, who turns 33 on Oct. 1, has a 5.40 ERA in 10 rehab appearances between Double-A and Triple-A.

Per MLB rules, players rehabbing from UCL reconstruction surgery are allowed three consecutive 10-day extensions, as long as approved by the MLB Players Association and MLB.

The extended rehab, which finished Thursday, will allow Trivino to continue pitching within the Yankees' system in the short term and aim to be promoted by the end of the year as a potential contender for a spot on the postseason roster.

The Yankees will have to decide how to configure their pitching staff for the playoffs depending on who they face and whether they play in a best-of-three wild-card series or a best-of-five division series if they win the AL East.

For example, if Marcus Stroman isn't a starter, the Yankees may decide it would be better to leave him off the roster and add a reliever like Trivino.

Alternatively, if the Yankees decide to use Nestor Cortes out of the bullpen to provide a second lefty option alongside Tim Hill, they may decide that acquiring someone like Trivino is more valuable than a third lefty like Tim Maza.
