Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel avoided discussing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's retirement on Friday morning after the player suffered another scary concussion.

NFL officials called for Tagovailoa to consider retirement after he was ejected in the third quarter of Thursday night's game against the Buffalo Bills after suffering a head injury in a gruesome collision with Damar Hamlin.

“I feel like it would be very wrong for me to even bother talking about that. It's more about really caring about the human being and it's absolutely about his career, right?” McDaniel said. “His career is his and I really, really hope for that. I completely understand that and it's not misplaced.”

“I know people want to go in that direction, but I just want people to just listen to what I'm saying for a second: It's not in his best interest to talk about his future. So I just ask everybody that really cares, just keep that in the back of your mind. Because if I answered that question, how would you feel? I'd say, 'OK, here's my thoughts on his career,' and he'd read it. Whether he agreed with it or not, I've just done him a disservice either way.”

“So I'm not going to take this opportunity. Out of my sensitivity and respect, I don't think it's appropriate and I don't think those types of conversations should be had when you're talking about someone's career. It's probably fair for their careers to be determined by themselves.”

Tagovailoa appeared to suffer a concussion during a 2022 home game against the Bills, but it was determined he had a back injury and stumbled after hitting his head hard on the ground during the play.

Just a few days later, in Week 4 against the Bengals, Tagovailoa was thrown to the turf at Cincinnati's Pacol Stadium, creating the disturbing scene of his hand sticking out, something that sometimes happens with head injuries that cause the fingers to curl.

He then suffered a concussion in a season-ending game against the Green Bay Packers, causing him to miss the rest of the season.
