Disney and DirecTV reach an agreement, and sports fans can breathe a sigh of relief

Sports fans who are also DirecTV subscribers can enjoy some relief this weekend.

You'll be able to watch sports again.

As we outlined earlier this month, a dispute between Disney and DirecTV over broadcast rights and fees has led to the satellite service stopping broadcasting Disney-owned channels as of September 1st.

This included both ESPN and ABC, and came at a time when the NFL season was starting, college football season was in full swing and the U.S. Open, which will air on both networks, was heading towards its finals.

That meant more than 11 million subscribers were unable to watch events like the season opener. Monday Night Football,it is San Francisco 49ers Beat Aaron Rodgers and the visiting team New York Jets.

But an agreement was reached between the two sides on Saturday, just hours before the start of a new all-season college football season.

“We thank all affected viewers for their patience and are pleased to be able to restore Disney's entire network portfolio in time for this weekend's college football and Emmy Awards.” The two companies said in a joint statement..

The terms of the agreement between Disney and DirecTV have been described by both parties as “robust,” and customers can expect “market-based terms” for Disney Channel, as well as access to “Disney's linear networks, plus multiple genre-specific options across sports, entertainment and kids & family, including Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+.”
