Jan Bruegel, the 11-4 second favourite, fought a long and difficult battle with stablemate Illinois before surrendering in the final stretch to give jockey Aidan O'Brien his eighth win in Saturday's St. Leger Stakes and jockey Shawn Revy his second British Classic stakes victory.
Both the winner and runner-up were the final foals sired by the legendary stallion Galileo, who passed away in 2021, and Jan Bruegel, who is unbeaten in four races, will go down in history as the great stallion's 21st and final British Classic winner.
“We knew the course and the distance suited him,” Levy said after the match, “and I thought he showed exceptional ability with that extra distance. [Ascot] He is in the process of developing a Gold Cup horse and I wouldn't be surprised if he improves even more next year.”
At Leopardstown, William Haggas's Economics, the 7-4 favourite, made a brave second attempt to narrowly edge out main rival Auguste Rodin to claim his first Group 1 win in the Irish Champion Stakes.

Economics was given a strong run from the outside by Ryan Moore to give the 9-4 chance and Auguste Rodin appeared to have the lead, but then Tom Marquand made more of a push to take a narrow but ultimately decisive lead, with Rodin leading by a neck at the finish line, with Japanese challenger Shin Emperor a further three-quarters of a length back in third.
