As of September 8, eight people had been killed on subway cars or in subway stations, up from five during the same period last year, according to NYPD data.
The murder rate is on track to match the highest level in 25 years recorded in 2022, when 10 people were killed.
“Waiting for a train is not a safe environment,” said Jakeba Dockery, 42, whose husband, Richard Henderson, was shot and killed on a Brooklyn train in January.
“It just feels evil,” she said. New York Post.
The most recent fatal subway accident occurred on September 5th.NumberAccording to police and Weston's family, a gunman shot and killed grocery store owner Freddie Weston, 47, near a MetroCard counter at the Rockaway Avenue station in Brooklyn just after 11 p.m.
Weston's sister said her brother might have been saved if there had been cameras installed near the ticket booths at the station.
The rise in homicides continues despite a variety of high-profile efforts that helped stem a spike in subway crime earlier this year, including the deployment of 750 National Guard troops to busy stations and the deployment of an additional 1,000 NYPD officers to monitor the subway system.
“The overall crime decline is largely due to our detectives' thorough investigations of all serious crimes that occur on the subway and the proactive efforts of our transit officers,” an NYPD spokesperson said. “This year alone, these officers have seized 43 guns (up from 28 last year) and 1,536 knives (up from 1,004 last year) from the subway system, the highest weapons seizure rate in the past decade.”
