Jane’s Addiction issues update after frontman Perry Farrell punches guitarist Dave Navarro onstage

Following an abusive onstage attack in which Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro, the rock band is speaking out and providing an update.

“We sincerely apologize to our fans for the incident that occurred last night,” the band wrote in a statement on their Instagram Story. “As a result, we are cancelling tomorrow night's Bridgeport show.”

The rock band assured fans that refunds would be issued for their purchases, and did not provide any further details about the mysterious incident.

Video shared on social media showed an agitated Pharrell lashing out at Navarro while they were performing “Ocean Size” at Boston's Render Pavilion on Friday night, with Navarro using his arms to hold Pharrell at bay, creating a barrier between the pair, while an angry Pharrell yelled at his bandmate.

Farrell punched Navarro before staff separated the musicians, who were restrained but Farrell resisted and was subsequently escorted off stage.

The venue went dark and the show came to an abrupt end.

The morning after the fight, Farrell's wife, Etty Lau, recounted what happened.

“There was clearly tension and animosity between members… that was the magic of the band dynamic. Yep, the dynamite was lit. Perry stood in front of Dave's face and body-checked him,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Perry's frustration grew night by night, as he felt the stage volume was so excessively loud that his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when a member of the audience in the front row began yelling abuse at Perry and complaining that the band was too loud, [playing] Perry was furious because the voices were too loud for him to hear.”

Musician and actress Etty Lau claims that the band started playing “Ocean Size” before Pharrell was ready, and that her husband “couldn't hear himself over the blast and vibration of the instruments, and by the time the song ended he was no longer singing, he was just… screaming to be heard.”

She wrote that bassist Eric Avery “won the battle.”

“Dave pulled Perry away and tried to calm the situation. Dan ran in and held Perry down and tried to calm the situation. Dave left to take off his guitar. Eric approached Perry in the dark, behind Dan, put him in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach. A long-haired crew member named Kevin pulled Eric away. Eric then calmly walked to the front of the stage and apologized to the audience for ending the show early.”

Ms Lau said that while Dave “looked handsome and cool during the fight”, her husband “was like a crazy beast for the next 30 minutes”.

“He ended up getting restless and breaking down in tears. Eric couldn't understand what he was saying. [deescalation] “Whether it was intentional or whether he took advantage of the situation to launch a vile attack on Perry. Well, here is… my personal story of what happened. Watch the video for yourself,” she concluded.
