Caitlin Clark just broke another WNBA record

Caitlin Clark continues to make history. In a WNBA game on Sunday between the Indiana Fever and the Dallas Wings, Clark set the league's all-time record for most points scored in a season by a rookie. The record was broken with a deep three-pointer in the third quarter, bringing Clark's season total to 746 points (and counting).

The previous record was held by Seymone Augustus, who scored 744 points in 34 games during his rookie season in 2006.

The rookie scoring record is the latest in a long list of records Kaitlyn Clark has broken this season, most notably with 19 assists in July, setting a new record for most assists in a single game by a player in league history. Last week, she broke the record for most assists in a season by a WNBA player, including rookies, surpassing Alyssa Thomas' mark from last year.

After setting the single-season assist record on Friday, Clark reflected on just how many records have been set this season. Earlier this week, A'ja Wilson set a new single-season record for points and Angel Reese set a single-season record for rebounds.

“I think it definitely speaks to this whole year, how historic it's been for this league, how great basketball has been for the league and we're not even in the playoffs yet,” Clark said. “It's fun to see records being broken and I think basketball is just so great and that's why it's fun to watch.”

Here are some of the other records Clark broke in her first year in the WNBA:

  • WNBA season record for assists
  • First rookie triple-double in WNBA history
  • Franchise record for most three-pointers made in a single season
  • Franchise record for most double-doubles in a single season
  • First rookie in WNBA history to record 400 points, 100 rebounds and 150 assists in a season
  • Most Three-Point Shots by a Rookie
  • Most points and assists in a season: 15 points and 5 assists
  • Most turnovers in a single season

With two games remaining in the regular season, several other records are on the horizon, including the most 3-pointers made in a season, set by Sabrina Ionescu with 124 3-pointers in 2023. Entering Sunday's game, Clark had made 116 3-pointers.

Since the Olympic break, Clark is averaging 23.4 points on 43.4 percent shooting, a big jump from his numbers before the Olympic break, and prior to August he was averaging 17.1 points on 40.5 percent shooting.
