Following reports of a second assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Sunday, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) blamed an uptick in vitriol from the left.
The Tennessee Republican said Democrats were inciting people “on the margins” and that they “knew exactly what they were doing.”
“[C]”Yes, we have to be careful, because what we're seeing right now is the power of suggestion,” he said. “The left is stepping up its venom. You've seen people tweeting things like, 'They need to learn how to target better,' and stuff like that. It incites people who are on the edge. They know exactly what they're doing. This system, this swamp, whatever you want to call it, it's an open sewer. They're raising the gauntlet. They know if Donald J. Trump is elected, their time is over. We're going to get this country back in order. They're going to do everything in their power to challenge that.”
“The problem, at least in my opinion and in the eyes of the public, is that the Secret Service is weakened and lacking leadership,” Burchett added. “And, of course, we have brave agents on the ground, one of whom committed that shooting. But why on earth would anyone be anywhere near this perimeter? This stare we're talking about just doesn't make sense to me. So we've got to get some answers. I don't think we're going to get answers under this administration, but I'm hopeful that under a Trump administration we'll be able to clear out this rat's nest. So, from Grant to Richmond, we've got to look at these departments. We can't take it anymore.”
