Candice Bergen takes jab at JD Vance during Emmys 2024: ‘Meow’

Candice Bergen has put her claws on the line at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The 78-year-old actress took to the Emmy stage to present the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, an award she has won five times for her role as ruthless “FYI” news anchor Murphy Brown in the TV series of the same name.

Before handing over the trophy, Bergen took a dig at Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, alluding to one of the most famous scenes from “Murphy Brown.”

“For 11 years, I had the incredible honor of playing the lead role in a comedy series called 'Murphy Brown,'” Bergen said.

“I was surrounded by great, interesting actors and had a fantastic script to work with. And there was one great scene where my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother.”

“We've come so far,” Bergen said, joking, “that today, a Republican vice presidential nominee would never attack a woman for having a baby,” she added sarcastically.

“So that concludes my work here. Meow!”

Bergen was, of course, referring to Vance's now-infamous comment about “childless, cat-loving women.”

In July 2021, Vance appeared on Fox News and told Tucker Carlson that the United States is “run by childfree, catty women who are miserable about their lives and the choices they've made, and they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”

Bergen became the second person to criticize Vance at the 2024 Emmy Awards ceremony.

Selena Gomez offered a scathing critique of Donald Trump's running mate during an appearance with her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short on the show that evening.

“Steve, it's a real honor to work with someone who can fall down and not get up,” Short joked.

“It's an honor for me to work with someone like a former women's tennis champion,” Martin interjected.

Gomez delivered the final punch line: “And let me just say, what an honor it was to work with two men who are the furthest thing from a childless Catwoman,” the actress and singer joked.

Gomez and Bergen follow in the footsteps of Gomez's close friend Taylor Swift, who recently endorsed Kamala Harris as a presidential candidate, presenting herself as a childfree, cat-loving woman.

“Voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for President in 2024,” Swift captioned a photo of her and her cat. She posted on Instagram.

“I will be voting for Kamala Harris. She is fighting for rights and causes that I believe we need warriors to defend. I think she is a poised and talented leader and I believe this country can accomplish so much more if it is led with calm rather than chaos. I am so encouraged and impressed that she chose Tim Waltz as her running mate, who has fought for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and women's right to their bodies for decades.”

“I did my research and I made a choice,” she added. “The research is up to you, the choice is up to you. And I want to say, especially to those voting for the first time, remember that you need to register to vote! And voting early is much easier. I'll include links to where to register, early voting dates, and information in this post.”

She signed off as Taylor Swift, a “kid-free, cat-loving woman.”

The 2024 Emmy Awards were filled with plenty of other memorable moments.

Dan and Eugene Levy kicked off the night with a satirical rendition of “The Bear,” John Oliver used the F-word repeatedly while paying tribute to his late dog, Henry Winkler played his famous “Happy Days” character Fonzie, and Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman previewed their new shows.
