Archaeologists Find ‘Child Vampire’ Graveyard Filled With Decapitated Remains

Archaeologists announced Thursday they have discovered an early medieval “anti-vampire cemetery” in Chelm, Poland.

The bodies were discovered during restoration of the gardens of the former Bishop of Unica in Gora Chełmská and appear to be those of two children, decapitated and lying face-down in the dirt. According to The body was pinned down with stones, a method often cited as an “anti-vampire” burial method, according to a Facebook post by the Lublin Regional Office for the Preservation of Monuments.

“Burial face down, decapitation and pressing stones against the body are some of the burial methods used to prevent possible demonic beings from leaving the grave,” the post details.

Two sticks were also found at the scene, which may have been used to immobilize the body. (Related article: Archaeologists uncover clues as to why ancient city suddenly disappeared)

The grave was oriented east-west and contained no coffins or other items for the children. Further analysis is required to determine the children's exact ages and other important details specific to this burial site.

Sadly, ancient vampire burials are not uncommon across Europe: in August 2023, the body of a young child was discovered in Piąň, Poland, buried face-down with an “anti-vampire” padlock on his face, suggesting that this was a fairly common practice in the region. At least one mass grave discovered in Poland, believed to be linked to vampire beliefs, contained 450 bodies with their heads cut off and placed between their legs. According to It's pretty scary to think that someone took the time to do this to 450 people, which shows how foolish and dangerous misinformed fears can be.
