Police in Ann Arbor, Michigan, announced Sunday night that they were investigating a report that a Jewish student was beaten by a group of men early Sunday morning and were considering it a possible “bias” crime.
Reports began circulating on Sunday that a 19-year-old Jewish man had been assaulted by a group of people who had learned he was Jewish. The group apparently beat the student after asking him to identify himself.
The student suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization, according to social media reports.
The Ann Arbor Police Department released the following: statement:
The Ann Arbor Police Department actively investigates bias-motivated assault cases.
The incident occurred on 9/15/24 at approximately 12:45 AM on Hill Street and S. Forest. The 19-year-old male victim reported he was walking when a group of unknown men approached him from behind asking if he was Jewish. When the victim responded “yes,” the group of men assaulted him. The suspects then fled the scene on foot. The victim sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. The incident was subsequently reported by the victim to AAPD on 9/15/24 at 12:20 PM.“We take bias-motivated crimes very seriously and have assigned this case to our hate crimes detectives. At this time, the investigation is still in its early stages and we have limited information about the suspect. We will provide more information as it becomes available.”

The University of Michigan has a long history of anti-Israel activism on its campus. Last week, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel Announced Criminal charges have been filed against 11 people who took part in an anti-Israel “camp” last spring.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who believes Israel should not exist, Criticized “You would expect this from a Republican, but not from a Democrat. It's really unfortunate,” Nessel said of the charges against the activists.
