Gov. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) said Sunday on ABC's “This Week” that officials in Springfield, Ohio, say Haitian immigrants are not eating their pets.
“There's a lot of garbage on the Internet, and this is garbage that is completely untrue. There is absolutely no evidence to substantiate this,” Governor DeWine said.
He added: “Hate groups are coming to Springfield. We don't need hate groups like this. I saw the documents that were sent to me yesterday that the mayor spoke about, that were allegedly sent by the KKK. Look, Springfield is a good city. They're good people. They're welcoming. We have challenges every day. We're working through those challenges. The cultural aspect of Haitians, my wife Fran and I saw this when we were in Haiti. Education is valued. So when you look at all of this, people who want to work, people who value children, people who value education, it's a positive impact on our community in Springfield. I think any comments about anything else are harmful and unhelpful to the city of Springfield and the people of Springfield. This is a state that's moving. This is a city that's moving. These Haitians can be a part of this, but there are challenges. I've spoken to people in the White House. We need more support.”
