Don’t Blame Us for Trump Assassination Attempt, ‘We’ve Always Said’ He’s a Threat to Democracy

During a Tuesday appearance on CNN's “The Situation Room,” Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), co-chair of the Harris-Waltz campaign, responded to accusations that the recent assassination attempt on 2024 Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump was the result of Democratic rhetoric, saying, “Democratic rhetoric has not escalated at all in recent months.” “Trump has always been a threat to democracy, and we have always said that.”

“Mr Trump is blaming the recent assassination attempt on him on Democrat rhetoric that presents the Democratic Party as a threat to our democracy. What is your response to that?” host Wolf Blitzer asked.

Duckworth responded: “Well, I think he's the most demagogue. In fact, the Democratic rhetoric has not escalated at all in recent months. He's always been a threat to democracy, and we've always said that. After all, he's someone who incited the January 6th riot, who has continued to cozy up to white supremacists and other racists and hate groups, and he's being incredibly hypocritical and trying to distract from everything that's now come to light – his terrible performance on the debate stage, his failure to develop IVF, his failure to put together an economic plan. And he's doing everything he can to try to shift the dialogue, the debate.” [are] It's really happening because of what's right in front of us: that voters have a real choice in November, and it's not Donald Trump.”

Blitzer continued: “So, senator, you don't think it's dangerous to call him a threat to democracy?”

Duckworth responded, “I think he really is a threat to democracy. What's dangerous is what Donald Trump did on January 6th – inciting violence and standing by for hours while this building I'm in and other buildings here on Capitol Hill were under attack.”
