Pharrell Williams has admitted that he's “not involved in politics” and believes other celebrities should also stop making political endorsements.
The pop star shared her opinion when asked about the upcoming election. In a new interview From The Hollywood Reporter.
When asked if the “Happy” singer would be lending her music to either side, Williams said she wouldn't be involved.
“I don't get involved in politics,” the singer-songwriter, record producer and nonprofit founder said in an interview published last Wednesday.
“In fact, it sometimes annoys me when I see celebrities trying to tell you this. [who to vote for].”
He added that while there are some celebrities whose opinions he respects, he doesn't generally like stars sharing their views.
“I am one of those people. [who says]”What the hell? Shut up. No one's listening,” Williams said.
Celebrity endorsements have been a hot topic, especially after Taylor Swift endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris after last week's debate.
“I'm voting for @kamalaharris because I believe she is fighting for a right and a cause that we need warriors to defend,” Swift said in an Instagram post.
Williams said what's important to him is “action.”
“I'd rather not get in the way and of course I'm going to vote how I want to vote. I care about my people, I care about the country, but I feel like there's a lot of work that needs to be done and I really want to take action,” Williams said.
Williams spoke about two nonprofits he founded: YELLOW, a 501(c)(3) focused on education equity, and Black Ambition, which supports Black and Hispanic entrepreneurs by investing in promising startups.
“That's what I'm committed to,” Williams said. “I'm not an activist, but I do believe in activism, and I need everyone's help.”
“I don't know if I'll vote for the far right,” he admitted.
“I won't do that,” he said.
