Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) expressed frustration over the Department of Homeland Security's unwillingness to hand over information requested by Congress regarding the first assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
“I am borderline outraged because the response from Homeland Security has been completely inadequate, in fact, I think tantamount to obstruction in many ways. … I will certainly support subpoenas if necessary,” Blumenthal told reporters on Tuesday.
Blumenthal I said before Referring to the shooting of Trump while he was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, he said Americans “will be shocked and appalled by the findings of the investigation into the missteps and failures that took place that day.” A congressional report on the Butler incident is due to be released soon.
Since Secret Service agents killed the Butler shooter, it's been hard to pinpoint his motives for attacking Trump. He was a registered Republican in Pennsylvania but had donated $15 to the Democratic fundraising site ActBlue.
“I have directed state agencies to act swiftly and provide full transparency to the public.”
The lack of answers from the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the U.S. Secret Service, is particularly concerning in the aftermath of the new assassination attempt that took place while President Trump was at his golf course in West Palm Beach on Sunday.
Unlike the Butler shooter, the social media accounts of the alleged West Palm Beach shooter, Ryan Routh, show he is opposed to President Trump and echoes Democrats' arguments about the upcoming presidential election.
“You should visit the hospitals of the victims of the Trump rallies and attend the funerals of the firefighters who died. Trump would never do that. Show the world what a real leader does,” Routh told Biden after the first assassination attempt in July.
After receiving no answers from the federal government about the first assassination attempt, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (Republican) announced that the state would conduct its own investigation into the second assassination attempt on President Trump, arguing that because Trump is not a federal employee, the state has jurisdiction over murder attempts.
“The suspect appears to have violated state law in multiple jurisdictions across this state, including the Palm Beach Judicial District, jurisdictions including Martin County and likely jurisdictions represented by Broward County. I have directed state officials to act swiftly and provide full transparency to the public,” DeSantis explained.
