The adults and children had been at the orchard on a “field trip” organized by the school, Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes said at a news conference.
The sheriff alleged that “one of the vans began to lose control while traveling downhill” and eventually “overturned,” causing “multiple injuries to both children and adults.” Three of the victims suffered “life-threatening injuries” and five were “severely injured,” Hakes said. All of the children have been reunited with their parents, Hakes added.
“At this time, we have confidence in the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department officers who were on scene. Our focus at this time is reuniting the children with their parents. Whenever we are faced with a difficult situation, we entrust everything to God's care and trust in His guidance,” Peter Michael, principal of St. Mark Lutheran Church and School in Eau Claire, said in a statement, WEAU 13 News reported.
