Florence Pugh says she had to defend age gap romance with Zach Braff against ‘nasty’ trolls

Florence Pugh believed she “needed” to save her romantic relationship with Zach Braff.

Pugh, 28, and Braff, 49, dated from 2019 to 2022 but faced criticism due to their age difference. In an interview with British Vogue, Pugh explained that she wanted to keep her relationship private but at one point felt compelled to speak out against “mean” trolls.

“People were bullying me and people were bullying my partner,” she told the outlet. “My relationship with Zach was actually pretty private until it got sour. I spoke out when I saw the impact it was having on him, on us and on our family.”

“Anyone you're with, you want to protect that person. It's not a good feeling to find out that people are saying the worst things you've ever read about someone you love. … I needed to talk about this.”

“My relationship with Zach was actually pretty private until it started to deteriorate. I spoke out when I saw the impact it was having on him, on us and on our family.”

Pugh understood that “any relationship in the spotlight like this is going to be stressful.”

Pugh defended Braff on multiple occasions throughout their four-year relationship. In 2019, the “Don't Worry Darling” actress responded to a comment from an Instagram user. In her post, He pointed out that there is a 20-year age gap between the couple.

“And yet he got it,” Pugh replied.

Pugh addressed the comments to Elle UK magazine in 2020, saying: “People have no right to tell me about my private life.

“It's strange that normal people are allowed to express such hatred and opinion towards a part of my life that I don't show.”

In April 2020, Pugh shared a video in which fans voiced their opinions on “who we should and shouldn't love,” captioning it, “Hateful attitudes are not in style.”

Braff and Pugh have remained on friendly terms since their split two years ago.

As for Pugh's current love life, she hinted to British Vogue that she is dating someone but is keeping her new romance private.

“We're figuring out who we really are,” Pugh told the outlet, “and for the first time, I think we're not allowing ourselves to take that rollercoaster ride. Rather than rushing into something, we're letting things evolve over time and be completely authentic to their core.”
