Climate Change ‘More Fundamental’ Threat Than Terrorism, Say UK Gov’t

Britain's top diplomat has argued that climate change is a bigger threat to Britain's national security than terrorism or Russia.

In his first major speech since his left-wing Labour party's victory in July's general election, Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on Tuesday that the expected climate crisis would be “central” to his job, despite the foreign secretary's traditional focus on international relations and foreign affairs.

“While I am Foreign Secretary, tackling the climate and nature crisis will be at the heart of everything the Ministry does. This is crucial given not only the scale of the threat but also the scale of the opportunity,” he said. said According to the BBC.

“The threat may seem less imminent than terrorists or imperialist dictators, but it is more fundamental – it is systemic, it is pervasive and it is rapidly moving towards us,” Lamy argued.

While the government is making cuts at home, most controversially to the payment of winter fuel subsidies to pensioners, Lammy said Labor would support other countries in developing so-called renewable energy sources and helping countries recover from weather-related disasters, such as in the Caribbean.

Britain's top diplomat also said the UK would aim to build a global clean electricity alliance where it could share its expertise on the transition away from fossil fuels with other countries.

“Tackling the climate and nature crisis will be at the heart of everything the Foreign Office does while I am Foreign Secretary. This is vital, given not just the scale of the threat but also the scale of the opportunity.”

Even as Britons continue to suffer from historically high energy prices, the new Labour government has decided to double down on the Conservative government's environmental policies, aiming to fundamentally overhaul the country's energy supply to meet the global target of net-zero carbon emissions by the end of the decade.

The mainstream media's support for green policies “proves we're on the right side of history”, says Richard Tice of Reform UK.

The Labor Party Claimed Citing high gas prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, they claim a “zero carbon electricity system by 2030” would lower bills for average Britons. Yet both the so-called Conservative and Labour parties will not allow fracking of British natural gas, rejecting an energy source that has contributed significantly to the US electricity market.

The left-wing government also plans to further shrink the country's fossil fuel industry by imposing heavy taxes on energy companies, particularly in the North Sea, one of the largest gas and oil producing regions under British rule.

According to analysis Energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie this week published Labor's tax reform plans, which would impose a 78% tax on companies from November, following a scheduled increase in Energy Profits Tax. Wood Mackenzie says the reforms would cause “irreparable damage” to the energy industry and could halve North Sea production by 2030.

But to mitigate this and reach the net-zero target over the next six years, the publicly funded Climate Change Committee Found Earlier this year it was predicted that offshore wind power output would need to triple, onshore wind power double and solar PV capacity five-fold. Additionally, the use of heat pumps for home heating would need to increase tenfold from just 1% of households today.

While the Labor Party touts the benefits of green policies that reduce energy dependence on foreign countries such as Russia, the reality is that Communist China controls 80% of the global solar manufacturing market, including finished solar panels and the raw materials used to make them, so it simply means trading one master for another.

China's state-subsidy-driven dominance of the electric vehicle market is also a threat to Britain's auto manufacturing industry and national security, according to a report published this month by the China Institute for Strategic Risks. The institute argues that modules in electric cars could be used to transmit sensitive data to Beijing's totalitarian government or to allow Chinese nationals to remotely control cars in Britain.
