General Motors has issued a recall involving about 450,000 trucks and SUVs that may have a faulty brake fluid warning light.
The recall includes the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and some 2023 and 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models.
NHTSA said software in the electronic brake control module of affected vehicles may not display a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs.

GM suspends sales of new trucks due to software issues
According to recall documents, the brake control module may fail to warn drivers of a loss of brake fluid before braking performance begins to deteriorate. In newer vehicles, such issues are often electrical in nature, and this one is no exception. A mismatch between the brake control software and the brake control calibration appears to be the cause of the failure.

NHTSA added that dealers will address the issue with an over-the-air update that will fix software in the electronic brake control module.
This is GM's second major recall of vehicles this year: In March, GM recalled 800,000 pickup trucks for a tailgate issue, including models built in 2023 and 2024.

The recall covers certain 2020-2024 model year Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with a power-unlatching tailgate. The recall affects about 570,000 trucks in the U.S. and about 250,000 trucks in Canada, making it GM's largest recall in the U.S. this year and one of the largest recalls filed so far in 2024.
