In a recent guest essay, TV host, chef, and actress Padma Lakshmi argued that VP Harris's talents as a chef also signal her potential as a leader.

A September article by Associated Press White House reporter Darlene Superville noted that Harris has been trying to appeal to voters and present a more approachable side after a late entry into the presidential race. “Since she became the nominee, Republicans have criticized her for not giving enough interviews and not sharing enough details about her policy plans,” she said. The AP article began“But the vice president is sharing personal details about his childhood, cooking and food to show a more private side.”
Lakshmi praised Harris for her “clear joy in cooking and talking about food of all kinds, which is a core passion of hers, like basketball was to Barack Obama and golf was to Donald Trump.”
“I want a president who is committed to raising and providing for our children. “All Americans,” Lakshmi wrote.

“Harris' candidacy is reinventing the rules in many ways. She's not just bypass “Subverting old expectations around race, gender and political activism,” Lakshmi continued. “Food is another example of how Harris sidesteps generational tensions.”
Lakshmi said Harris' candidacy also signals a cultural shift in how voters view female politicians and cooking.
“Cooking has long been a trap for female politicians,” Lakshmi writes. “To be taken seriously, many felt they needed to reject the domestic sphere entirely and take up baking to offset the perception that they were too ambitious.”
“In cooking, Ms. Harris exemplifies exactly the qualities this country desperately needs. careand her ability to tell a new kind of story about what it means to be an American,” she wrote.
