Democrats need a “blue wave” on Election Day to retake North Carolina from Republican control, Eric Dougherty, assistant news director for Voice News in Florida, explained during the show. Breitbart News Saturday.
Host Matthew Boyle provided some context for the North Carolina numbers, explaining that Democrats are down significantly compared to 2020, while Republicans are “up in the number of mail-in ballot requests.” In 2020, there were more than 1 million mail-in ballot requests, of which 49 percent were Democrats and 18 percent were Republicans.
“Right now, there are only 200,000 absentee ballot requests for 2024, and of those, 37 percent are Democrats and 23 percent are Republicans. That means Democrats are down 12 percent from 2020 and Republicans are up 5 percent. That's a net gain of 17 percent,” he said, with Dougherty saying this is a “huge challenge for Democrats to make up for.”
“We have an in-person early voting period coming up in about 25 days from now. North Carolina Democrats have an opportunity. They have an opportunity. A slim opportunity, but an opportunity nonetheless. And they basically need a blue wave at the in-person polls right now,” he explained.
“If you look at where we are in 2020, in-person voting leans Republican. Early in-person voting is a little bit favorable and Election Day is generally favorable for Republicans. So they're 16 points behind. It's going to take a lot of work for Republicans to have a chance to compete at the presidential level,” he said, explaining that he personally believes it's too late for Democrats to catch up.
listen:
“The way I look at it, I think it's too late now. I don't think we can recover from being down 11 points at this point in 2020. And comparing it to the pandemic is actually still a fair comparison. If you look at the ratios, we're down 11 points while Republicans are up 5 points. What that tells me is that all of the Democrats who were basically spoon-fed a mail-in ballot in 2020 decided not to request one,” he said.
“So I think, if you're not going to put in the effort to vote by mail, why on earth would you stand in line for 20 or 30 minutes to vote if you don't have the energy?” he asked, noting that a decline in mail-in voting would also hurt Vice President Kamala Harris, because mail-in voting typically skews Democratic anyway.
“The amount of banked votes that Kamala Harris has right now overall, and in North Carolina in particular, is really, really low compared to 2020, which would have required hundreds of thousands of mail-in votes. And if that amount is reduced to 500,000, it significantly reduces the opportunity for Democrats to bank votes and significantly increases the opportunity for Republicans to easily vote in person and vote as they are expected to do on Election Day and hand North Carolina to Donald Trump,” he added.
