Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (Democrat) on Sunday called former President Donald Trump's comments that women would stop thinking about abortion if he won in November “just crazy.”
Whitmer, co-chair of the Harris-Waltz campaign, called Trump's comments “totally ridiculous” in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”
She said Trump doesn't understand the challenges women face every day.
“I don't think this guy understands what the average woman in this country faces in life. How could he understand? He's never lived a normal life,” Whitmer said. “Unlike Kamala Harris, who's worked an hourly job, no one knows how important it is for women to have health care and get the medical care they need.”
“He's just nuts,” she added.
The Michigan governor responded to Trump's comments at a rally on Saturday afternoon, saying, “Women will be happier, healthier, more confident and free. They will never even think about abortion.”
The reason the women are happy is because the issue will be sent back to the states, he said.
Former President made a similar statement In an online post on his platform “Truth Social” on Friday, he suggested that women would be better off if he were president.
“Women are poorer than four years ago, in worse health than four years ago, and less optimistic and confident about their futures than four years ago!” Trump wrote on Friday.
He argued that if he were elected, these feelings would be resolved and “abortion would no longer be on the table, because abortion should be provided by state governments, as it always has been.”
Trump's Friday night statement came hours after Harris delivered an abortion-focused speech in Georgia, in which she spoke about the pain experienced by women in states that ban abortion and blamed Republicans and their GOP rivals for their suffering.
