After opening the season with two straight losses, the Carolina Panthers head to Sin City to take on the Las Vegas Raiders, who are five-point favorites at Fanatics Sportsbook with Andy Dalton set to start for Carolina.
Dalton starting over Bryce Young complicates any spread betting for me, but I think a point total above 40 would be a good bet.
Neither defense looks very good, but with Dalton starting, both quarterbacks in this game are capable passers who can handle an NFL offense.
Unfortunately, that doesn't look like something Young will be able to do, as he is averaging just 12.3 points per game in 18 games with the Panthers.
Meanwhile, Dalton had the best game of any Panthers QB in 2023, throwing for 361 yards and two touchdowns in Week 3 of last season against the Seattle Seahawks. That game was likely no fluke, as he passed for 2,871 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions with the Saints two years ago.
The bottom line is that Dalton is a solid, league-average quarterback who gives the Panthers offense a better chance to succeed than Young.
Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew falls into that same category, but he can at least throw to Davante Adams and Brock Bowers. Adams had a great game last weekend against the Baltimore Ravens with nine catches for 110 yards and a touchdown, while Bowers lived up to expectations with 15 catches for 156 yards in two games.
Considering both Carolina and Las Vegas have sub-par defenses, this game should be higher scoring than expected. Expect solid quarterback play from Minshew and Dalton to take the overs against below-average defenses. Fanatics Sportsbook Promotions Sign me up.
