Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) said Sunday that Vice President Harris should certify that she is a gun owner by telling Americans “what kind of gun I own.”
“Well, I don't think anybody believes Kamala Harris is a gun owner,” Comer said. said Maria Bartiromo, host of Fox News' “Sunday Morning Futures.” “But if she is, she needs to tell the American people what guns she has.”
At a campaign event earlier this week, Harris said that if someone were to break into her house, “I would be shot.” Her comments about a possible break-in were in response to Oprah Winfrey's comments about the vice president carrying a gun, an issue she also mentioned during a recent debate with former President Trump.
“If someone breaks into my house, they're going to be shot,” Harris said Thursday, laughing. “I probably shouldn't have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”
Harris campaign adviser Keisha Lance Bottoms later said the comments about the break-in were a “joke.”
“It was a joke, and she knew we were still talking about this, but I think it's important for people to know that the vice president respects gun rights, supports the Second Amendment, wants responsible gun ownership and wants our communities to be safe,” Bottoms told CNN on Friday.
The vice president also spoke about being a gun owner during the last presidential campaign.
“Just like Senator Kamala Harris's turn on the southern border wall, where she went from saying the wall was racist to now trying to suggest that she's scared just like everyone else and that she has a gun to protect her family,” Comer said during an appearance on Fox News.
The Hill has reached out to the Harris campaign.
