Maryland and Mississippi join a large and growing list of states that will open up early and absentee voting on Monday.

Key lower-level races in early voting states today

About 20 states are voting, including Wisconsin, Minnesota and Virginia.

While the states beginning early voting today are not as competitive as the presidential election, Maryland's Senate race is likely to be one of the most closely watched on election night.

The state last elected a Republican senator in 1980, but former Gov. Larry Hogan is tied with Democratic challenger Angela Alsobrooks in recent polls and has offered a series of moderate policy proposals without incurring the wrath of former President Donald Trump.

Hogan is a Republican but has been a vocal critic of President Trump.

Alsobrooks is banking on her experience as a county commissioner and prosecutor, and she also has an advantage in a heavily Democratic state, which is ranked D-leaning in the Fox News Power Rankings.

How to Vote in Maryland

Vote by Mail:

Maryland began accepting absentee ballots on Monday. Applicants do not need to provide a reason to receive a ballot. The state must receive the ballot application by Oct. 29, and the ballot must be delivered to state officials by Nov. 5.

Early In-Person Voting:

Absentee ballots can be returned in person up until Election Day. Early voting begins October 24 and ends October 31.

Voter Registration:

Maryland residents can register to vote online or by mail until Oct. 15, or in person during early voting or on Election Day.
