Former President Trump will be heading to Tuscaloosa, Alabama this Saturday to watch the University of Alabama vs. University of Georgia football game.
The University of Alabama confirmed on Monday that President Trump plans to attend the Alabama vs. Georgia game this Saturday, September 28th at 7:30pm ET after “receiving a personal invitation.”
“Campus safety is and will remain our top priority, and UAPD works closely with the U.S. Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies to coordinate security efforts,” the university said in a statement to The Hill.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed that Trump will attend the game and be present with Republican officials, including Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who will headline an event in Birmingham on Friday hosted by Sen. Katie Britt (R-Alabama).
The University of Alabama said it would have walk-behind metal detectors and strictly enforce a clear bag policy “as at all UA football games.”
“Additional safety measures will be implemented in collaboration with local and federal agencies, and fans are encouraged to arrive early to expedite the security screening process,” the university said.
Trump's visit to the tournament came on the heels of an apparent assassination attempt on his Florida golf course, just months after a bullet grazed his ear at a rally in July. Trump has called for increased security in the run up to the election and said the Secret Service would beef up security for his upcoming golf trips.
The university said its focus is on ensuring “a safe and positive game day experience for all student-athletes, fans of both teams and everyone visiting campus.”
This will be the third time that President Trump has attended an Alabama football game. He attended the first half of Alabama's win over Georgia in the 2018 national title game and then left during halftime. In 2019, he attended Alabama's loss to Louisiana State University.
This will be the sixth time that a sitting president, president-elect or presidential candidate has attended an Alabama football game, including President Trump's two previous appearances. The Anniston Star reported.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
