An illegal immigrant is accused of killing St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) Officer David Lee, a 44-year-old husband and father who had been with the police for 18 years, in a drunk driving crash.
Ramon Arnaldo Chavez Rodriguez, a 24-year-old illegal immigrant from Honduras, was arrested. Charged These include fatal accidents caused by drunk driving, speeding, and driving without a license.
Chavez Rodriguez is alleged to have been speeding and lost control of his vehicle on Sept. 22. Police allege Lee was responding to a single-vehicle accident on the side of the highway when he was struck by Chavez Rodriguez's vehicle and thrown several feet from the scene of the accident.
Lee was rushed to St. Louis University Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Police allege Chavez Rodriguez had a blood alcohol content of 0.10 percent. The legal limit in Missouri is 0.08 percent.
Lee's wife, Tonya, said “He was my shadow and my best friend,” local media reported.
“He was my partner, my other half. He was half of my heart and I was the other half of his heart,” Tonya said. Lee's son, Khalil, said his father loved to play basketball and was dedicated to his job as a police officer.
“He was someone I could talk to about anything. He was the reason I decided to go to criminal justice school and do what I'm doing now,” Khalil said.
Chavez Rodriguez remains held without bail in a St. Louis jail.
