Parliament passed a bill on Wednesday that will fund the government until nearly the end of December.
House of Representatives and Senate Passed A stopgap spending bill that would extend the deadline for government spending until December 20. Also known as a continuing resolution (CR), the measure maintains the status quo on federal spending.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) had attempted to attach the SAVE Act to a spending bill that would have required proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, but after this ploy failed, Speaker Johnson opted to pass the stopgap spending bill without the SAVE Act.
On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., boasted about the apparent victory.
“I have agreed to pass the government funding bill tomorrow without amendments, avoiding an unnecessary government shutdown,” Schumer said. Announced“Families can rest assured that their lives will not be unnecessarily turned upside down by unnecessary closures.”
Breitbart News' Bradley Jay reported:
Johnson has publicly opposed a three-month continuing resolution for some time. During the August congressional recess, Johnson announced that he would attach the SAVE Act, a bill written by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and supported by Donald Trump to restrict foreign nationals from voting, to the six-month continuing resolution (CR). If successful, this bill would allow current spending levels, no matter how uncomfortable it may be for conservatives, to continue through March, when the Trump Administration would virtually hold majorities in the House and Senate and take control.
But Johnson's August announcement caught party members off guard, and many across the ideological spectrum within the party were not pleased that he was being asked to follow through on a bill that many thought he was not serious about passing.
“The Speaker is using CR to create a government funding crisis the week before Christmas,” Rep. Thomas Massie wrote Tuesday.
“Why Christmas? To exploit lawmakers' desire to see their families on Christmas Eve and pressure them to vote for bills they haven't read.”
The spending bill is expected to go to President Joe Biden for his signature.
