The Orioles suffered a blow to their postseason starting rotation on Wednesday.
Starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez will sit out the remainder of the regular season and the postseason, manager Brandon Hyde told reporters at Yankee Stadium ahead of the second of a three-game series against the Bronx Bombers.
Rodriguez has been on the disabled list since Aug. 7 after injuring his right latitudinal muscle while warming up before a game against the Blue Jays.
The 24-year-old right-hander pitched a few times out of the bullpen but didn't show enough improvement to qualify for the playoffs. The Baltimore Sun reported..
“Unfortunately, we're going to rest him,” Hyde said. “He's not going to make the playoffs. We're going to prepare for 2025. It's unfortunate and tough that we lost that time with him, but he's very talented and he's going to be a big part of our rotation this year and going forward, so that's just how we lost our time with him.”
Rodriguez spent the first part of this season on the disabled list after dealing with right shoulder inflammation in April and May.
Now that he's officially rested, the 24-year-old will finish the 2024 season with a 13-4 record and a 3.86 ERA in 116⅔ innings.
“It's not a setback,” Hyde said of the injury. “Typically this is an injury that takes some time and we were a little quick to get him back in time for the playoffs, but we felt it was the right thing to do for his health and his future.”
After Wednesday's battle at Yankee Stadium, the Orioles have four games remaining before the playoffs begin.

Pitchers John Means, Tyler Wells and Kyle Bradish are also out for the season due to injuries.
