Derrick Rose, who won an MVP award at the peak of his career, is retiring after 16 seasons in the NBA.
The 35-year-old was selected first overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA Draft and made an immediate impact on the team.
Rose won Rookie of the Year in 2008-09 and was the youngest player in NBA history to win MVP at age 22 in 2010-11, while also being named to the All-Star team in three of the first four years of his career.

“You gave me the gift of our time together that I will forever cherish. You told me it was okay to say goodbye and reassured me that no matter where life leads me, you will always be a part of me,” Rose wrote.
Rose was on the cusp of becoming one of the NBA's biggest superstars before he tore his ACL in Game 1 of the Bulls' first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers in 2012. He was never quite as explosive around the rim and nearly missed two entire seasons while recovering from surgery.

After seven seasons with the Bulls, Rose played for five other teams in his career, including two stints with the New York Knicks, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves, before spending his final season with the Memphis Grizzlies.
