Smith caught a pass from Jalen Hurts in the second half as multiple Saints players were trying to tackle him but were initially unable to bring him down. As players continued to try to wrestle Smith to the ground, and Smith was still moving his feet, Boyd caused a helmet-to-helmet clash that blew Smith's helmet off his head, sending Smith swinging his legs around.
No foul was called on the play, but it sparked accusations that a Saints player had committed a dirty hit. Smith eventually left the field under his own power and underwent a concussion test.
Boyd defended himself in a now-deleted post on his Instagram Story.
“I never intentionally tried to seriously injure anyone. I was just trying to play ball. Get better soon,” the NOLA.com post read.
Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton played three full quarters despite a torn ACL.

Boyd, a rookie who was a sixth-round draft pick out of the University of Northern Iowa, has recorded one total tackle in three games and 45 appearances on defense so far.
Saints head coach Dennis Allen defended his players on Monday.
“I think our guys are playing extremely hard and we're going to fight until the end of the down,” Allen said. Via ESPN“I don't think we play dirty. We've never played dirty. It's not about the way we coach or the way we teach, but we play hard.”
“Nobody wants to see anybody get hurt, nobody's trying to hurt anybody. Unfortunately, that's part of our business. No, we don't play dirty. We don't coach dirty, but we play hard and we play physical.”
The Saints will travel to face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
