It's Thursday. I can't wait to see the sun again. It's been such a long wait. I know our Seattle readers are shocked. 😬 Here's what's happening today:
- Adams is the first New York City mayor to be indicted.
- The Capitol building was largely empty until Election Day.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Washington for talks.
-
Florida is preparing for Hurricane Helen to make landfall tonight.
- Three homes on the Outer Banks collapsed into the ocean this week.

It's a bad day for Eric Adams.
|
Mayor of New York Eric Adams(D) was indicted on federal corruption charges; beginning The sitting mayor faces criminal charges.
How much does it cost?He faces five charges, including wire fraud and bribery. Read the unsealed indictment
From the indictment:“Adams, who by 2018 had made clear his plans to run for mayor of New York City, not only accepted but also solicited illegal campaign contributions and other things of value from foreign nationals in his 2021 mayoral election.”
“We will fight these injustices,” Adams said.: While the indictment was still sealed, Adams posted a video response online, saying that if he is charged with federal crimes, “these charges will be completely false and based on lies.” Watch Adams' video statement
Was this a sudden occurrence? Not really. FBI agents searched Adams' home earlier this year as part of their investigation, and the homes of several of Adams' staff were searched earlier this week.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-CortezSenator Ocasio-Cortez, the governor of New York, called on Mayor Adams to resign on Wednesday, saying, “I do not understand how Mayor Adams can continue to govern New York City. The proliferation of resignations and vacancies threatens to undermine the functioning of the government. Constant investigations will make it impossible to hire and retain competent officials.” Post to X.
What happens next? The New York Times reported that Adams is under no legal obligation to step down, but if he did a special election would be called. “There are other ways Adams could step down. The New York City Charter gives Gov. Kathy Hockal the power to remove him from office. But the process would be complicated.”Read the NYT commentary: “If Eric Adams is indicted, what happens next?”

Zelensky picked a quiet day for his visit to Washington :
|
|
|
(*I really hope you didn't have any bad luck with this one.)
President of Ukraine Volodymyr ZelenskyHe is in Washington today for a conference after most lawmakers have left for campaigning.
On Capitol Hill He is meeting with a bipartisan group of senators. include Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (Democrat, New York) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell(Republican, Kentucky).
📹 Watch as Zelensky arrives at the parliament building— I wonder what he and Schumer are talking about. Punchbowl Andrew Desiderio attention “At least 15 senators walked in,” he said.
And visit government offices : Vice President Harris I will meet with Zelensky this afternoon. President BidenThis morning, he pledged $8 billion in aid to Ukraine, drawing on funds from military stockpiles that were threatening to expire on September 30th.
Unpleasant The trip has been tense due to Zelenskiy's recent spat with Republican lawmakers, who he recently called senators. J.D. Vance (Ohio Republican) “Too extreme.” Republicans are also outraged by the Pennsylvania visit, arguing it could be seen as election interference. More on tensions between the GOP and Zelensky

A bipartisan House task force is investigating the assassination attempt on the former president. President Trump The first public hearing was held. View the hearing

|
The bell rings and everyone runs down the steps of the Capitol. It's recess.
|
The first round of government budget drama is over. Both the House and Senate passed a three-month budget extension to allow for budget disputes to be sorted out before December 20. Both chambers are out of town for election campaigning and will be out of session until after Election Day.
I'm not saying the Republicans won this round, but… Republicans emerged from this battle looking quite divided. The House passed the bill with every Democrat voting in favor and 82 Republicans voting against it. Mike Johnson(Louisiana Republican) needed Democratic support or the plan would have failed because hardliners would have been unhappy with it.
Yes, but Republicans are coming out of this battle feeling bullish about their chances of taking control of the House, Senate and White House next year. Read Emily Brooks and Mike Lillis' report on the state of the Republican Party
